What will 2012 bring for SEO?

With the new year shaping up we can almost guarantee to see some new trends in SEO services for 2012.  The past few years have seen some massive changes in the internet marketing industry and there is no reason to believe that this year will be any different.  While you may not personally agree with everything on this list, here are some of the top trends that experts believe will impact search engine placement.

The first is the idea that social media will grow in importance.  Some still do not believe that sites like Twitter and Facebook have any effect on your placement.  However there are plenty who say otherwise.  Those who believe compare the social media usage of today to linking and content data services ten years ago.  It will be interesting to see if Google’s algorithm, who has been making growth interpreting social graphs, takes social media into consideration.

Another belief is that we will see less and less organic rankings, in favor of paid advertisements.  Like anyone else, Google has intense pressure to keep their revenue streams strong and steady.  Therefore it is only natural to suppose that they will think of new ways to incorporate paid sections.  It started slowly with ads and pay-per-click and then grew to their shopping listings.  Could we see Google Maps, sign-up forms, product reviews, recipes and more all of a sudden come with a premium?

If the above is true then it leads to the third idea, that paid searches will squash any supplementary SEO efforts.  Google has already hinted that they want SEO firms to include paid searches as part of their services and may rewards those that do.
