Berlin education after the war

Berlin has found its way after the collapse of the Great Wall in 1989. The wounds of the war in the city’s capital may be hard to forget but it has since became a city known for its’ lively, multi-cultural, and fresh atmosphere. Berlin is now an international melting pot of high-class culture and a favorite tourist location. For foreigners who want to learn the German language, there are many German schools in Berlin to choose from because the ideal location to learn German is in Berlin.

Foreign students may also want to take a look at one of Germany’s leading universities. The Humboldt University of Berlin (Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin) is the oldest university in Berlin. Founded in 1810, the university was formerly known as the University of Berlin (Universität zu Berlin) by Wilhelm von Humboldt and he influenced other European and Western universities on his university model. From 1828, it was known as the Frederick William University (Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität) and was later unofficially called as the Universität unter den Linden. It changed its name in 1949 to Humboldt-Universität in honor of both its founder Wilhelm and his brother, Alexander von Humboldt. The university is home to 29 winners.

A “Fachhochschule” (FH) or a university of applied sciences is a German specialty with only a short tradition to look back on. It was established in 1976 as a result of an educational policy debate held in the 1960s when the German industry complained about their educational system being too theoretical at traditional universities. Fachhochschulen are well known for their practical, hands-on approach and close cooperation with commercial enterprises and its clear structure and organization of degree courses. When enrolled at a Fachhochschule, students can pursue either the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree study programs.
